ABSTRACT:

Background of the Study: Low birth weight constitutes 30% of live birth which becomes a major health problem for neonatal deaths. KMC adherence is of primary importance for decreasing neonatal deaths. The aim of this study is to provide knowledge regarding KMC among mothers of low birth weight babies.

Objective: To assess the knowledge regarding KMC among mothers of low birth weight babies.

Design and Methods: Pre – experimental one group pre test post test design was used. Thirty mothers were selected by Convenient sampling technique. The pre-test was administered by structured knowledge questionnaire followed by structured teaching programme. After 7 days, the Post-test was administered by the same structured knowledge questionnaire for evaluating the effectiveness of STP on kangaroo mother care among mothers of low birth weight babies. The questionnaire was categorized the knowledge level such as inadequate knowledge level, Moderate knowledge level, and adequate knowledge level.

Data analysis: The obtained data was analyzed using descriptive, in terms of objectives and hypothesis of the study, inferential statistics and interpreted. The level of significance was set at 0.05 levels.

Results: The finding of the study revealed that there was a marked increase in overall knowledge score of post test than the pre test score which represent the effectiveness of STP (t=3.04; p<0.005).

Conclusions: The study concluded based on findings suggested that STP was effective among mothers of low birth weight babies for improve knowledge regarding kangaroo mother care.

INTRODUCTION:

WHO states that every minute of everyday somewhere in the world and most often in developing country, a new born dies from complication related to birth. Low birth weight is an important indirect cause of death. Maternal complication in labour carry a high risk of neonatal death and poverty is strongly associate with an increased risk. 1

Kangaroo mother care adapted from kangaroo involves placing the newborn infant in close skin to skin contact with mother. It is effective method to meet the baby’s need for warmth, love, touch, safety and security following birth and in the immediate postnatal period. 2

Benefits of KMC include improved cardiac, gastrointestinal functions, neurodevelopment and respiratory stability, protection against infection, and effective thermal control. 3

NEED FOR THE STUDY:

There are state to state variations within the country. Almost 50% of neonatal deaths occur within first one week of life and majority of them within the first hours of life. It is evident that Gujarat state is facing the problem of reducing neonatal deaths even though there are well established neonatal intensive care units in the government hospital attached to medical college.4 UNICEF (2013) says that more than 20 million infants born each year, weight less than 2.5 kg, accounting for 17% of all birth in developing world. Infants with low birth weight are at higher risk of dying during their early months and year.5 The use of KMC appears to be an attractive alternative to conventional interventions in the care of infants in under- resourced setting. KMC technique is not currently in common practice especially in India. It would be feasible to implement only if there is strong motivation and national commitment to change the practices of medical personnel and mothers.6

OBJECTIVES:

1. To assess the knowledge level regarding KMC among mothers of low birth weight babies.

2. To assess the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on knowledge regarding kangaroo mother care among mothers of low birth weight babies

3. To determine the association between pre-test knowledge with selected demographic variables.

MATERIALS AND METHODS:

Research design:

The research design selected for this study was pre experimental one group pre test post test design

Setting:

This study was conducted in private hospital, Rajkot

Population:

The target population for this study was mothers of low birth weight babies.

Sample:

mothers of low birth weight babies in private hospital, Rajkot  Sample size: 30

Sampling technique:

Convenient sampling technique was used to select the sample

Data collection procedure:

Structured Teaching Programme

Data analysis:

The data obtained was analyzed in terms of the objectives of the study using descriptive and inferential statistics

MAJOR FINDINGS:

The demographic variables showed that majority 15 (50%) of samples age group between 19 – 20 years, 14 (47%) of samples age group between 26 – 29 years, & 1(3%) of samples age group above 30 years. Regarding education 13(43%) were primary education, 11(37%) were secondary education, 3(10%) were graduates & illiterate were 3(10%). Regarding health visit during antenatal period, 4 (14%) mothers had done only one visit, 25(83%) mothers had done 3 times visit & 1 (3%) had not done any visit. In the pre test 15 (50%) had inadequate knowledge, 14 (46%) had moderate knowledge and 1 (3%) had adequate knowledge. In the post test, 02(6%) had moderate knowledge and 28 (94%) had adequate knowledge. The post test overall mean 20 (SD=12) was higher than the pre test overall mean 8.86 (SD=9.4) and the obtained ‘t’ value was 3.04 which is significant at 0.005 level. The significant association was found between pre test level of knowledge and demographic variables (education of mother). Chi square value (6) is more than table value at 0.05 level of significance.

CONCLUSION:

The finding of the study revealed that in the pre test 15 (50%) had inadequate knowledge, 14 (46%) had moderate knowledge and 1 (3%) had adequate knowledge. Thus, Structured Teaching Programme was effective and improved the knowledge of mother on Kangaroo Mother Care; the research concluded that the prepared Structured Teaching programme was effective.
